Interview: Solène Debiès

How long have you been in the illustration industry, and how did you start?

After a first experience in an advertizing agency, I began as a freelance illustrator in the year 2000.

What’s your background?
I was born in Brittany, in France, and still live in Nantes, near the french west coast.
My clients are mainly located in Paris, but also in other countries such as India, UK, USA…
How would you define your style?
Colorfull and stylysed.
What’s are your influences?
The work of some painters, designers, fashion creators and  asian women’s clothings, for their colors and patterns.
How do you get inspire? How do you feed your creativity?
I get inspired by everyday life and my travels.
How do you work? Do you have a routine that you like to follow?
I begin to work at 9 am, at my desk.
Do you allow yourself time for your personal project on a regular basis or only when you can? And why?
Yes, I think it’s essential in order to get my inspiration renewed. As many times as I can, I do it.
Best and worst things of being an illustrator?
Best aspect : I can schedule my time as I like, and live from what i love doing.
Worst aspect : not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
Mac or pc? Software used
I work on a Mac. After making a rough sketch with a drawing pencil, I scan it and work on it using ”illustrator”.
Favourite material to draw:
a drawing pencil
What project are you actually working on?
I’m working on book covers for girls paperbacks for the editing house Hachette), and also on some new illustrations for the personal calendar that I send to my clients and prospects.
Your favourite artists
Picasso, Matisse, Toulouse Lautrec, Tamara de Lempicka.
And finally, one tips or advice for those who want to work in this industry:
I’d say he or she would need to have a real passion for the job, plus a good amount of self confidence and also of patience”.
