End of september, the school book, that I draw, came out . A lot of people, ask me about it as the Publishing House doesn’t not have yet a website, although they do have a facebook page . Yeah, finally! I was able to finish one painting! Bare in mind that it’s one of my first painting, I’m still learning, and still have a lot to learn. In the meantime, I will daydreaming while looking at the website of Rebecca Dautremer.

*Socialize the old way:

Your internet is not working,so you are very annoyed. You have to socialize to get your name/brand out there, but you can’t tweet,email or get into Fb.  How about snail mail?  Send a postcard with your art on it. How about pick up the phone and give a call?

*Back to basic

You can’t use you computer and you are a digital artist. That’s suck (I hate that when it happens) but you can grip your markers,pencils and draw, sketch or try something new.

*Go out to look for the informations

You were supposed to look for some information, go to the library, to the museum check out a gallery in town.

Don’t waste your time, moaning or be devastated, seek for the opportunity to do something else, or something new. Look for the bright side! Cheer up!

How long have you been in the surface design industry and how did you start?

I have been an independent artist since August 2008. Prior to that I worked as a designer in the kidswear product development area at Nordstrom. You can find the whole story here :

What’s your background?

My background is Advertising and French by degree

How would you define your style?

Romantic, modern whimsy. (That is a new one for me, think I am in an evolutionary period right now)

What’s are your influence?

Travel and culture are the top of the list. I am also really influenced by home decor and fashion.

How do you get inspire? How do you feed your creativity?

Here are a variety of things that happen when I need inspiration in no particular order. Start daydreaming about a place I have never been. Go salsa dancing. Head to Anthropologie. Go to NYC. Go to a musee. Peruse Elle Decor. Do yoga. Have a giggle and a glass of wine with a good girl friend. (translation – walk away, and just let the inspiration come).

How do you work? Do you have a routine that you like to follow?

I am a virgo, so I have systems for EVERYTHING. I do prefer to have my days go to a set rhythm. However, circumstances have made that a bit difficult in the past year. So now I am experimenting with going with the flow a bit more. I am feeling out just having set goals that have to happen in the day, but allowing them to unfold as they will. We’ll see how it goes, it is all a work in progress.

Do you allow yourself time for your personal project on a regular basis or only when you can? And why?

This is a tough one because my work is inherently a personal project. However, there are some other artistic adventures I do want to explore that have nothing to do with my work at this time. I am hoping to create the space for those things in my life this summer. I’ll keep you posted.

Best and worst things of being a surface designer?

It really is just all fun. Obnoxious, but true.

Mac or Pc? Software used:

Mac of course. Adobe Creative Suite, Daylite (for Biz mgmt), and can’t live w/o Pandora.

Favourite material to draw:

Don’t think I am partial to anything in particular. It is however much easier for me to work in collections as opposed to one offs.

Your favourite place to work:

Varies by the day. Office, Coffee shop if I want to people watch a bit.

The last “new medium” (tool) you tried or learned?

Think I would have to say wordpress. Using it for my site has given me so much freedom to change my message as I grow.

What project are you actually working on?

My next fabric collection and preparing for SURTEX

And finally , one tips or advice for those who want to work in this industry:

Create. Create. Create. and then… Submit. Submit. Submit. Remember a no never means no forever. Successfully licensing your work is as much about persistence as it is great collections.
